Because millions of barrels of drilling wastes were generated each year, mainly including drilling fluids and drill solids, especially oil-contaminated drill cuttings. Because of this, the drilling environmental regulatory requirements have become more stringent, technologies have advanced and many oil and gas companies have, willingly, embraced more efficient and environmentally friendly drilling waste management methods.The three main aspects of drilling waste management are reduction, recycling and disposal.

Drilling waste reduction can adopted more efficient drilling practices like directional drilling, drilling smaller diameter holes and using drilling techniques that require less drilling fluids. This can also be achieved by utilizing muds and additives that are less harmful to the environment.

Drilling waste management recycling is an important aspect for oil and gas companies in the region today, which recycling drilling waste and reusing it for construction and restoration purposes. There are two equipments for drilling waste management recycling : vertical centrifuge and Hi-G Dryer.

The KOSUN vertical centrifuge returns and recycles large percentages of SBM (Synthetic Base Mud) and OBM (Oil Base Mud) to an active system which in the past was lost as waste products to the environment. KOSUN vertical dryer can reduce the total amount of discharged OOC below 6%, which is currently the discharge limit in many areas of the world, our goal is 5% , and even further.

KOSUN's Hi-G Dryer recovers drill fluids cuttings from water-based and oil-based drilling fluids, can make the proportion of the liquid phase in the drilling to be lower than 10%, can significantly reduce the cost of the waste discharge, and is particularly effective in recovering the oil-based mud cuttings.

Drilling waste disposal is common measure in drilling waste management.Most drill cuttings are disposed except some which can be used as the cap rock for landfill after being hydrated. Normally, when treating onshore drilling waste, people first pump the fluid from mud pit and then bury the rest solids in-situ or scatter them around. Or they will re-inject the cuttings into formations, either by the annular space of wellbore or by the special injection well. Compared with onshore drilling, it costs more to dispose of the offshore drilling waste. Sometimes, a landfill site is designated for oilfield waste management inside the drilling block. In other areas, operators can transmit the waste that complies with emission standards into a city or industrial waste lanfill site. What is more, people also manage the waste via several other ways like, injecting the discharge into formation cracks by the pressure larger than formation fracture pressure, or re-injecting the discharge back to natural earth cracks and salt caverm by the pressure smaller than formation fracture pressure.
